Ashley’s 16th birthday is fast approaching, and I would really like to be able to do something special to celebrate. But..
- She doesn’t like crowds
- Too much noise and too many lights can be overly stimulating for her
- She has a very short list of foods she will eat
- And she doesn’t have any real ‘friends’ because of the severity of her disability and the communication barriers presented by her deafblindness.
All those reasons are why we usually end up celebrating her birthday at home with just the family.
But I really want this birthday to be different – to be special – something she can remember always.
Any ideas????

You've mentioned before that Ashley likes gardens and stuff like that (I think?), so is there something nature themed in your area you can do?
Or are there any macaroni and cheese restaurants nearby? :) Mac & cheese is ALWAYS awesome on birthdays.
Happy birthday Ashley!!! Now we're the same age. :)
Tea at a botanical garden, or winter garden.
May be far fetched, but the folks at Make A Wish may have some great ideas for things in your area that would be fun for Ashley.
I don't know what state you are in, but in NYC there is an entire place devoted to mac and cheese. I realize this wouldn't work for ashley because it's noisy and crowded and whatnot, but maybe there are cool places like that near you?? I'll have to check their website to see if they have any cool mac related stuff. haha.
Molly, we live in Virginia.
The mac and cheese and garden ideas are great! Thanks!
Converse shopping spree!!!
Hmmm.... I was going to suggest some really cool converse too- possibly ones that she can design herself all sparkly and Ashleyriffic.
Depending on her sensory tolerances, she may either love (or really hate) some "spa time"? Y'know, take the girl for a pedi or a massage? Or an afternoon in a jacuzzi tub?
Mommy dearest, I'm liking the spa idea! I'll have to investigate the ones in my area. Maybe they will have a private room or someplace not too stimulating.
converse shopping spree - also a great idea, especially since we have a Converse outlet not too far from us :)
